As part of their training, fourth year student dentists from the University of New England College of Dental Medicine spend time working and learning from practicing dentists. These students have been chosen as they have met all school guidelines proving they are clinically ready to be providing care to patients in outpatient settings. The student dentists use this opportunity to apply their earlier dental school training.
Dr. Stephen Phillips has been chosen to teach dental students because of his excellent dental and teaching skills and his commitment to training students. BVHC is thrilled to be a teaching facility for UNE student dentists. When our patients are seen by dental students, all decisions regarding their care is under the direct supervision and control of Dr. Phillips.
Through this partnership, BVHC welcomes three externs a year for a total of nine months, providing additional access to dental care to our patients.
Nicholas Guy from UNE
After completing his rotation at BVHC, Nick graduated from UNE College of Dental Medicine in May of 2018. Dr. Guy has returned to southern Vermont and has joined a private practice in Manchester. We are thrilled that he is back in the area!
Allison Robbins from UVM
Of Allison’s time with us, Dr. Van Berckelaer stated, “It’s a really critically important way for us to build a primary care workforce in the state of Vermont. We have a real shortage of primary care providers. Not enough medical students go into family medicine, so it’s an opportunity for us to show them that it’s fun, it’s rewarding, and that the relationships we build with our patients are really meaningful.”
